J is for... Joneses

I see them everywhere
Wearing a Prada and a Jimmy Choo pair
With rosy cheeks and glossy lips
Sculpted bodies and full hips
They saunter out of their luxury cars
Eat a salad, drink Martinis in bars
Then take selfies for the Gram
To immortalise this big sham.

And now they sit, like all of us
Their closets now superfluous
All those items gone to waste
Life has changed, it's slow paced
Love, kindness, relationships, matter now
You even must pluck your own eyebrow!
Will these Joneses pitch in to feed the poor
Or that money is just for grandeur?

I’d keep up with them if they keep up with this tragic time
If they don’t step up, their shopping list is a heinous crime.
Use this money for a greater cause
Bring back the world to what it was
Give it forward, the need of the hour
Show-off the bank balance, and great power
Then take selfies for the Gram
Immortalise this - cause then it’s not a sham.

So, for the AtoZ challenege, I started out with travel stories and moved on to fiction. But you see I'm a poet, and I cannot live without writing a poem on the current tragic situation. Forgive me for moving away from my theme every few days!
Also, be kind.

  1. Nothing's better than a poem with a social message :)

Is this something you're witnessing in your neighborhood on a daily basis?

    1. Not in my neighbourhood, but a lot in my hometown in India. Hoping that the money is also used for charity and not just luxury brands.

  6. From the reel world of glam to the real world of kindness the path is easy if one decides to. But will they? Only time will tell. At the same time, I can see many a helping hands coming out of the so called glam towers in these trying times.
    Poem with a powerful message!

    1. People are definitely trying to help in one way or the other. But as you said, switching from glam world to the kindness path is not easy. Hope they will step up.

  8. Nice one Nisha... I guess kindness is not related to money... There are people rich and plum right now sitting on their heap of money not shelling out a penny for any cause forget about Covid situation!!And at the same time there are also people contributing in whatever way they can irrespective of how much or how little wealth they have!!
