J is for... Just Joking

Some jokes aren’t funny. What do you have to say about these –

I would have paid for my wife and her mother to fly on Malaysia Airlines.

But I spent all my money sending them on a cruise after the Concordia capsized.

This one is actually sick. How can people joke about people who were on that ill-fated plane?

yUVi is now XYZ.

Frankly, I don’t think poor Yuvraj Singh deserves this flak after the T-20 final. Maybe he is not playing well. Sachin couldn’t also at times. I mean, I shook his hand the same morning, dude. #showingoff

I was raping a woman the other night and she cried, "Please, think of my children!"

Kinky bitch.

These jokes about rape and genitals – oh, how much I abhor them.

Really these lame jokes are all over the Internet these days. Men and women read these and LOL. What’s happening to our sense of humour? We smile over dead people, rapes amuse us and we feel happy at someone’s downfall? Get creative with it, people.

You can’t mock someone and use the phrase ‘Just Joking’. You can’t tell me I have a paunch like a pregnant woman and get away with it. You really can’t accuse me of adding too much garlic in Chinese food, tell me it is not done like that and then laugh like I don’t know anything. There is a line, and you should know where to draw it.

People joke about Blondes, Irish and Sardars. I really don’t think the people in question are not offended by the humour. They laugh because they don’t know what else to do.  You need to know the thin line between cool and uncool. These jokes are not only personal attacks but they also display lack of imagination. You want to be humorous right? – Get creative and make people laugh. I am sure there are racist jokes that even the subjects laugh at – find them but don’t belittle them. Good timing and appropriateness can be an asset. Sarcasm and demeaning someone can be a liability.

We need Santa Banta back. We need more of The Big Bang Theory. We need movies like Queen and cartoons like Garfield to make us laugh. Humour is a serious business, if you need to say ‘just joking’ after telling the joke then you perhaps should not be cracking it.

    1. Yes, fortunately most of us have not been at the receiving end. But those who have been... I feel bad for them.

  2. While I love to laugh, I take most things people tell me as gospel and really don't like it when people joke with me. I seriously am not capable of taking a joke. Loved your choice for the letter J.

  4. You hit the bulls eye, the corrupt physic phenomenon percolated across almost everyone around we interact in today's life. I wonder, where a sense of respect for others emotions, grief or something very personal, has eroded. In this sense of humor centric world of such joke, in SMS, Whattzapp groups etc are disgusting that when I keep distance from all people, i am made fun of, that I am an non-sensible guy, boring, serious, blah, blah blah. But atleast you have the intellect to beautifully joked & made fun of the people going on doing euphoric joking.

    1. Oh we are only interested in distress. Sadist we all are and hence the jokes that attack people personally.
P.S. Are you the same person who wrote me a mail today?

  6. The problem is people don't know what is funny and what is not. Making a crack at the expense of other's or jokes that hit below the belt are just not done!

    1. That is why this Comedy Nights with Kapil is such a relief. Most of his jokes are actually nice. And whatever attacks he does on people is done in a light hearted many without hurting any sentiments.

    1. I have seen some 5-6 episodes of the show. So far I think he is a decent guy who knows his limits. I am glad that there is one comedy show in our country that we can watch with our entire family.

  13. Making such sick, disgusting jokes in the name of humor is pathetic.
Making such insensitive, tasteless jokes speaks a lot about such people!

    1. It just goes on to show their insensitivity to such issues. If we joke about our PM then perhaps its fine; he owes this to us. But joking about people who are suffering is iintolerable.

  14. A very different take, Nisha and one I agree with. I especially despised the one about the Malaysian airlines one. Aren't people human anymore? Mindless forwarding of jokes without understanding the implications! Very good post, Nisha!

  19. Sadly, what happens these days is that people are so frustrated that they find pleasure in laughing at someone else's expense. So, a group of people pick on someone they think is a soft target, they joke about him/her and everyone else has a good laugh. Things get bad when the same person becomes a butt of all jokes at every opportune moment. It wouldve been easier to laugh at yourself when youre confident that youre not being singled out.

Reminds me of a tacky dialogue from the movie Kalyug, that somehow seems apt here - "Yeh Kalyug Hai..Yahaan Doosro Ki Takleef Khud Ka Mazaa Hai."...or something like that.

    Cheers

  20. I hate the type where every serious and depressing news is somehow churned into a meme or a sad joke or a sarcastic cartoon. I hate how people look for publicity and few facbook likes based on such jokes!
    Great post!

  21. People have always laughed at another's pain -- and the school yard can be full of mean kids, I think a lot of it is based on the other J word so many have used for this challenge -- JEALOUSY.

  22. The need to make fun of others to make yourself look better or smarter or cooler is way uncool! The sad truth is that there are many who make such jokes and get away with it because the kind of group they are in. I feel the best jokes are the ones you make on yourself. If you cannot laugh at yourself you shouldn't laugh at others. .
